Happy Birthday. Healthy reflections and more about life in private practice.
Happy Birthday
Celebrating 3 years in private practice.
As I celebrate being in private practice, I wanted to share with you the challenges I’ve faced as an entrepreneur and what I look forward to most about the future.
Read on for an inspiring reveal about your therapist.
I opened the doors to my private practice at the beginning of the pandemic. What was I thinking?
Melice Mitchell Psychotherapy (MMP) was born from the notion that therapy is a way of taking care of the most important muscles in your body; your brain (thoughts) and heart (emotions).
I started my career in mental health before it was popular. I knew the work I was doing was changing lives.
I wanted to help as many people as possible, providing support. My goal was to encourage individuals to be the most grounded and peaceful version of themselves. And then, the pandemic started.
What are the biggest challenges you have faced as a private therapist?
One of the biggest challenges has been trying to navigate how to scale as a private practice while still maintaining integrity.
It’s difficult to bridge the gap between being a therapist and being a business operator. I remain authentic in my interactions. While also working with individuals who come with layers of experiences and emotions. All the while I try my best to keep therapy affordable. It’s a pretty complicated formula.
What keeps me grounded is that from day one my goal was to:
1) help,
2) teach,
3) challenge,
4) and encourage.
I help individuals move from contemplating therapy, to fully engaged in therapy. It’s a complicated task, and so worth it.
What are you most excited about right now?
Right now, I feel like I’m in an exciting moment as a therapist and business operator. I’ve spent the last year personalizing my website, streamlining my clientele, honing my niche, supporting my clients, and curating a community.
I’ve said goodbye to working with my hospital team, whom I greatly respected, to solely being on my own in private practice.
What does the future of your practice look like to you?
Looking forward, means reflecting on where I came from. I think back to my younger self telling my immigrant parents, I am going to work in Mental Health. They did their best, while also not fully understanding how I was going to support myself. I would tell my younger self, YOU’VE GOT THIS!
I am truly grateful for the mentors and supporters who encouraged me along the way.
I’ve also been thinking about some other projects, hopefully that will be coming to fruition later this year.
Ultimately, my goal is to stay true to my cultural roots, while being authentically genuine.
Writing this blog, I am truly grateful to be doing what I do. What’s the saying, if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.
If you’d like to discuss how to start your therapy journey, I’d love to chat with you.
